Project Background and Site Conditions

Island X lies in the South Pacific and has a tropical climate with high humidity. The project names two hazards: salt spray corrosion and cyclone risks. The brief is an island construction camp for 300 people that stays in service for 12 months.

The scope covers accommodation areas, a dining hall, kitchen, restrooms, shower facilities, a medical center, offices, a recreation room, storage rooms and equipment rooms. The stated goal is a camp that is safe, reliable, fully functional and adapted to the tropical island environment. CWTC's solutions page describes its integrated approach to tents, power, climate control, sanitation and furnishings.

Camp walkthrough. The sections below follow a visit through the camp: 01 entrance and master plan, 02 kitchen and dining, 03 toilets and showers, 04 accommodation, 05 clinic and support buildings, 06 foundation and utilities. Each colored square matches a zone on the master plan.

Feature Two-story tent with medical rooms on the ground floor and offices and meeting rooms above.
Advantage Medical and administrative functions share one building instead of two.
Benefit The camp has on-site medical rooms for its 300 residents.

 Recreation Room

The recreation room is 16.6 m × 14.6 m × 3 m with a 150 mm × 108 mm × 3.0 mm aluminum frame. It includes a prayer room, a card and board game room and a TV room, separated by solid partition walls for sound insulation.

Ground elevation

Ground preparation calls for concrete floor leveling and compaction 0.2 m thick, with a floor concrete height of 0.4 m. All building foundations must be level to within 10 mm, and slopes must be provided at drainage points.

Electricity plan

A total electrical load of 740 kW is reserved. This figure is a preliminary estimate to be refined against specific requirements. Accommodation is allocated 2 kW per unit for lighting and power outlets. Outdoor camp facilities include mosquito-control lamps, decorative lighting and a public address system.

Drainage points

The sewer well is 3 m deep, and underground drainage pipes lead to the municipal main drainage pipeline.

Feature Leveled foundations (tolerance 10 mm), sloped drainage points, 3 m sewer wells and a 740 kW reserved load.
Advantage Ground, power and drainage are specified together with the tents, so the site is prepared as one system.
Benefit The camp has a defined power reserve of 740 kW and a defined drainage route to the municipal main.

Project Highlights

  1. Every listed function of the island construction camp, from accommodation to equipment rooms, is placed on one site plan.
  2. The kitchen runs from unloading and inspection through cold storage and processing to a 108-seat dining hall.
  3. Accessible toilets, a mother-and-baby area, an accessible shower and barrier-free restaurant access are drawn into the plans.
  4. A two-story clinic and office building puts medical rooms and offices in one structure.
  5. Foundation tolerance, drainage slopes, sewer wells and a 740 kW reserved load are specified with the tents.
